“Show me the Avant Garde and I’ll show you a good time” says Ed Young.
Working as a conceptual artist, Ed Young often challenges the South African and international art world, its methodologies and specific modes of operation. Young is not afraid to take risks, and this is expressed in his various irreverent and at times deliberately politically incorrect productions. He works in various mediums to achieve his objectives, and his body of work includes video, performances, sculptures and text-based art.
Ed Young has had solo shows in Cape Town, Durban and Miami. His work has also been included in several group shows locally and abroad, including ¡Alptraum! in Berlin, Los Angeles and Cape Town in 2011; 1910- 2010: From Pierneef to Gugulective at the Iziko South African National Gallery in 2010, Grin & Bear It at the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, Cork in 2009; Hollywood Remix at the Hayward Gallery in London, 2008; The Art of Failure at Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel in 2007. Earlier exhibitions include How Contemporary Video Artists See the USA (Part 1) at Figge von Rosen Galerie, Cologne in 2006 and T1 - The Pantagruel Syndrome, Castello di Rivoli d’arte Contemporanea di Torino, Turin in 2005.
Until recently, Young was the co-director of YOUNGBLACKMAN, an artist run gallery in Cape Town.
