20 Stellenbosch builds on the successful sculpture exhibition 20: South African Sculpture of the Last Two Decades which was hosted in Gauteng by the NIROX Foundation in 2010. Like its forerunner this exhibition will, in part, present a survey of the achievements made by South African artists in three-dimensional work over roughly the last two decades. In addition the exhibition considers performance and conceptual art within a sculptural context; and challenges assumptions about the scope and depth of local sculpture.
20 Stellenbosch: Two Decades of South African Sculpture opens on 26 October 2011. The opening event starts at 5pm on the corner of Church and Andringa Streets, Stellenbosch.
The artist Joachim Schönfeldt created a performance piece for the opening entitled Q&A which takes the form of a parade and features the musical talents of members of the Groot Drakenstein community.
The exhibition will run for a year and includes over 30 outdoor sculptures and other artworks placed at various locations within the historic town of Stellenbosch. Certain sculptures will be situated indoors at the Rupert and Sasol Art Museums, University of Stellenbosch due to the fragility of the works.
Participating artists include Sanell Aggenbach, Beezy Bailey, Wayne Barker, Deborah Bell, Willem Boshoff, Andries Botha, Kevin Brand, David Brown, Jacques Coetzer, Barend de Wet, Guy du Toit, Sue Pam-Grant, Kay Hassan, Jackson Hlungwani, Anton Karstel, Dylan Lewis, Noria Mabasa, Samson Mudzunga, Ntuli Pikita, Joachim Schönfeldt, Mary Sibande, Doreen Southwood, Willem Strydom, Rina Stutzer, Egon Tania, Angus Taylor, Strijdom van der Merwe, Herman van Nazareth, Edoardo Villa and Sandile Zulu.
