That lauded painter Johann Louw’s intense and powerful works are created in a rustic barn on a farm on the outskirts of Piketberg, a small town in the Western Cape, is almost to be expected. His portraits, seascapes and still lifes reveal a sense of quietude and emptiness not out of keeping with his solitary and fairly rudimentary working space, to which he drives each day from his home in town.
