ARTWORKS

Tjeko presents a series of collage-style works, incorporating his interpretation of the Ditema style, while also bringing together other images as he creates vast, detailed, and bold paintings. Inspired by images, both vintage and modern, Tjeko seeks to create a dialogue between the old and contemporary in his new series of work, highlighting this contrast with black and white photos and vivid, colourful digital-age images. While recreating Ditema for a contemporary world, it is fitting that Tjeko finds himself caught between, and trying to reconcile, the past and the present.

“…the works in SMAC Gallery attend to intimacies and care in the artist’s life as a mother. The desire to look to her child without the projections of her own ego speaks to the quiet sacrifice of self that is implicant in becoming a parent. The artist’s recent focus on mirror neurons and emotional homemaking is evident in these canvases that evoke abstracted versions of the family unit in their physical placement within the gallery space. Individual and unique pieces hang clustered together to create a composite work, or lean and hide behind each other in evocation of familial bodily bondedness.”

This exhibition runs concurrently with Mudge's current participation in the 'Motherhood: Duality and Paradox' exhibition at ISIKO SANG, curated by Andrea Lewis.
